Cheers! 8 Years to a New Beginning
Updated: Apr 3, 2019
Just recently, I heard a small snippet from a sermon being preached by the dynamic, fearless, powerful Pastor, Sarah Jakes Roberts, about birthing. There was one part that stuck out the most, which she questioned with so much passion, “Do I have any women in this place that have been pregnant with purpose for far too long?” This interrogative statement made my belly leap as if she was speaking directly to my seed called purpose inside of me. Talk about CONVICTED!!! Like, whooo, did you have to hit me like that?
Yes, it did because how much more time will I waste being unproductive and unfulfilled because I have been afraid to push? I have run from doing things so much and you know why? Self defeat! Fear of how things will work out; fear of who is going to support; fear of lack of resources; fear of feeling inadequate; watching the tempo and rhythm of others and feeling like I could not possibly keep up.
When I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer back in January 2011, I thought life was over for me. I felt hopeless, purposeless and useless. From mental changes to physical changes, that journey had truly taken its toll on me. On my birthday of that same year, I experienced a great loss – hair loss. My hair was my baby. With the same care, love and attention a mother cares for her child, I was the same with my hair. When it fell out, I felt I lost my identity. I looked different and I wasn’t completely comfortable with whom I had to look at in the mirror. As I continued through treatment and encountered several other changes, the more I looked at that same mirror, I began to see my image differently; it was deeper than what I used to gaze at on the surface. I saw true beauty. I saw strength. I saw fearlessness. I saw faith. I saw purpose. This experience helped me realize that all that I’ve gone through from birth up to that point, was for a purpose bigger than me!
No longer will I forfeit living out my purpose by being afraid. So today, my 40th birthday, eight years after I gained a new identity of self, I give you the gift of TruStory Empowerment! I understand now, more than ever, that I am enough and there is an assigned reach of people for my hands. Someone’s life changing moment is waiting on the seed I’m expected to sow and/or water. Life is no longer guaranteed the way it once seemed, and God has preserved my life for such a time. “I will not die; instead, I will live to tell what the Lord has done.” – Psalm 118:17
